At GRECODECO, we are strong believers that the interior design of all hospitality establishments should delight and inspire their guests. After all, it’s good business – inspired guests linger, spread the word, and return.
In a world where too many hotels, museums, and restaurants boast interiors that may be modern and trendy but not always memorable, we design spaces that are romantic, immersive, and utterly unique. With our wide-ranging portfolio of projects and nimble design approach, we provide our clients with idiosyncratic interiors that excite their guests and provide them with an emotion-evoking, one-of-a-kind experience they can’t find anywhere else.
In today’s post, we’re sharing who we are, how GRECODECO got started in hospitality, and our guiding philosophy behind our hospitality projects.
Meet GRECODECO: Where Whimsy, Luxury, and History Collide
At GRECODECO, our team of talented designers is passionate about all things hospitality, culture, and history. We’ve worked on a wide variety of commercial buildings all over the world, many of which are adaptive reuse projects in iconic spaces.
When revamping these historic buildings, we always take inspiration from the space’s own history. Our adaptive reuse process requires, among other things, a deep respect for the building itself and expertise in various design eras such as early Modernist, Arts & Crafts, Victorian, Japonisme, Art Deco, and Art Nouveau.
But our team’s knowledge of different design eras is not simply for recreation. Instead, we allow ourselves the freedom to work outside of a single design era, instead layering various time periods, cultural touchpoints, and design influences all at once. We’ve found that throwing out the design “rulebook” in this way allows us to create a comfortable yet evocative experience for a space’s guests–an experience they’ll want to return to time and time again.
Beginnings: How We Got Started in Hospitality
Our principal designer, Adam Greco, undertook his first hospitality project working with BD Hotels in New York City on their Pod Hotels brand. His first international project was when he served as an in-house designer for the international private member’s club Soho House. This project was the Ned Hotel: an adaptive reuse project in London set in an elaborate building that was once the Midland Bank headquarters. This 252-bedroom feat of architecture was converted into a hotel over the course of five years and features custom furniture and unexpected splashes of color alongside period details like walnut paneling and ten-meter-tall columns adorned with African Verdite. The lengthy but rewarding process of designing the Ned not only fed Greco’s interest in hotel spaces but also equipped him with invaluable experiences, opening a door to continue crafting custom, curated interiors for clients in the hospitality industry.
Present Day: Our Philosophy of Hospitality
Today, the GRECODECO team has a special knack for historical research and leverages our in-depth gathering process with each project we take on. Whether we are bringing life back to a talent-agency-turned-bar in LA or a 19th-century villa in Oslo, Norway, we consider not only the building’s history, but the surrounding area and its cultural context, spending time in museums, nature, and nearby public buildings.
We also do a deep dive into our client’s vision and business goals, which we foreground throughout the design process. If we’re designing a restaurant, for instance, we’re also thinking about how we can increase our client’s ROI by maximizing the amount of seating, carefully considering the space’s flow to boost efficiency, and curating an inviting impression from the street. And of course, aesthetics and business goals go hand-in-hand: if a restaurant space is particularly beautiful, guests will be more likely to stay longer, ordering a second or third drink and dessert.
To create truly amazing designs that will stand the test of time, our team takes care to focus on a building’s history, function, and aesthetics. All these considerations are integral to our design approach, allowing us to exceed our client’s expectations and provide a memorable but comfortable experience for their guests.
